Please remember to properly (and promptly) refrigerate your food after cooking, and more to the point, make sure that people who are cooking food that you are going to eat a few days later do the same.

It was curry that took me out of commission. Which is only right and fitting (and the odds were in it's favor considering how much curry I eat)

Just look after yourself, because you don't want to be like I am today. You just don't. :O

What you DO want to do is be the kind of person who votes in the Second Chance poll: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/996359.html It's closing tonight, which really big stakes. We are losing 1/3 of the field. It's pretty close over there, so I would definitely make sure to get your votes in. One or two could shift the balance and change the outcome!

Also closing tonight is the deadline to get your entries in for the main competition: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/997016.html

There's still quite a few missing, but I'm hoping that's just the last minute crowd doing their usual thing.

How are YOU feeling today?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's deadline day! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/977744.html We're still missing *a lot* of entries. Don't make me turn this car around...

I have some things on my mind. But you already know what they are! :)

What's going on with *you* today/this upcoming weekend?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The poll is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/976026.html

A link I just happened to see this morning: http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-oldest-human-ancestor-20170130-story.html

Less than two weeks until I get married!

What's going on in YOUR life that's gotten you all excited?

Please note: that the previously announced drop has been edited. [livejournal.com profile] n8tastrophe had one bye remaining, and has taken it.

Oh, sorry, I thought that was what we were supposed to post today on Livejournal. :)

Today IS the deadline for Week 6. Or rather, it was.

Sometimes I give you a break, sometimes I don't. This is one of the former.

I'm extending the deadline to Tuesday, Jan 24th at 7pm EST http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/971359.html

Use that time wisely.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Over the past few weeks I've seen a number of posts on my various social media feeds about people fed up with dating and frustrated with the idea of meeting someone.

At the risk of being "that guy", it wasn't that long ago that I was in the same boat - and I know how easily I could end up being right back there. (depends on the day :D)

But I still want to share what ended up working for me. Maybe it will be of use to someone. Probably not. But perhaps it will end up starting a conversation in the comments and something good will happen there. Or maybe people will just tell me how really wrong I am. Which is always fun too!

I used the site OKCupid for years. Never really branched out much from there. I know there are a lot more options now, but what I really liked was the matching percentages, and how there was a separate "friend percentage" as well. I took time to answer as many of the matching questions as I could, and kept answering more whenever I had free time... eventually I had answered almost all of them! It wasn't just about setting my own numbers, there were a few of them that actually made me stop and ask "what is ACTUALLY important to me?"

For the most part, I used it as a way to make friends after my divorce. I helped organize "meet ups" of other single people who wanted to get out of their house, meet people (and play some "nerdy board games"). That didn't help me get any dates, because I was busy during the events just making sure everything was running smoothly, and, if I'll be honest, I really wasn't putting myself "out there". But it did put me in a position to form a new friends group that wasn't the married-with-kids completely settled types that I still very much liked, but I couldn't hang out with the same way.

The dating I *did* end up doing did end up being "meet up related", they were never women who showed up to the event - but I was emailing everyone and just telling them about the event, so I was checking out a lot of profiles and sending out a lot of messages. Which eventually led to some conversations that actually *about something*. We were talking about the event, and it went from there. I think the sincerity helped when they realized "Wow, this guy is ACTUALLY emailing to see if I want to go to this event to meet OTHER people" and the conversations could go from there with actually talking to each other rather than the usual awkwardness.

But even then, I didn't fully appreciate the percentages involved. There were two "significant" OKC relationships and they were both with women who I had a 86-90% match with. You would think "that's really good", and while we *did* get along, especially with the lower match, that was just too big of a gap.

The friends that I really hit it off with, were in the high 90s (both in friendship *and* relationship potential). I'm still friends with most of them, even years later.

It was after one of those break ups though - with a woman who was probably one of the kindest people I've met, but we were really not well suited, and we both knew it (one of those "both people don't want to hurt the other ones feelings, until one of them takes the risk and they are both kind of relieved" moments) - that I made the decision "I'm not going to worry about this anymore!" I was just going to take the time *for me*, and concentrate on who I wanted to be.

But I found that I kept looking over at the site. Even though I told myself I wouldn't.

After a few months off-and-on of that, I finally decided "I'm going to inactivate my profile". But, of course, I wanted to look one last time - one of those "well, if I *were* looking right now, who would be out there?"

and there was someone with a 99% match. (I believe 97% friend match, but it could have been a point in either direction)

I'd never seen a profile match THAT high before. The closest had been 96% and those had become really good friends of mine.

Well, it wouldn't hurt to look at the profile right? Maybe check out a picture and see...

I read her words and it was like someone was reaching into my chest and holding onto my heart. I saw the picture... and yeah, I would have followed that woman anywhere.

She wasn't really looking for anyone either, having just got out of a serious relationship. She was finding her feet again and wanted to take things slowly with any potential relationships - but was setting up her profile to start having those conversations.

There's an "Message Me If" section, where you can put potential conversation starters. Hers was about one of her favorite bands and really asked for an emotional response. Which is exactly how I reacted to their music as well... so I just answered that question and sent it out to the universe, thinking I would never hear back from her. (Because I'm me and that's how I think...)

She responded by the time I woke up the next morning. (at the time it felt like several days, but when I went back to check the *actual* amount of time, it was a few hours)

We've talked every single day since then. (and yes, I did abandon everything I had previously known and followed her to a town I previously wouldn't have been able to locate on a map.)

I'm not entirely sure where I was going with that. :) Other than to say that if you are out there looking for someone, go with a place with a Match system and answer as many questions as you possibly can, as honestly as you can.

More importantly though, and this is easier said than done - don't go out "to meet someone". That way leads to madness. At least it did with me. I've seen quite a few people just end up circling the drain because of that cycle. If you *can* get out and make new friends, definitely do that. Concentrate on being just being the best "you" that you can be. Concentrate on finding ways to make yourself happy.

Don't disregard that urge to "look one last time" though. Because (well, at least for monogamous relationships - other mileage may vary) you really only need it to work that one time. :)

/cliched "advice"

Something that works every single time is our topic thread: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/958277.html If you are a current contestant, go there and link your entry. You still have a couple days, but let's not wait until last minute. It would be embarrassing to miss when there is probably the most time EVER given for a single entry. (*that's* something you don't want on your dating profile!) (Granted, I've seen at least one good reason for someone to miss, and I'm sorry for her loss. The rest of you get extra kicks!)

The Work Room is still open for those struggling: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/958506.html

Take advantage of the room, and of the Mentor. Don't let the topic intimidate you and get into your head. There are *so many* ways to go with it, you just can't play *its game*, you need to play *yours*.

You've got this.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Your first entries are due tomorrow: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951685.html

How is everyone doing with that?

I haven't said this before, but it's important. Or at least "important". Make sure to start reading as soon as you can. Don't wait for the poll. Because you're never going to have enough time to finish everything in a poll - something is going to come up. But if you give yourself that head-start, it will be easier.

I'll also give you the heads-up, for those who don't know, that the first poll will probably take me the longest to set up. I'm almost caught up with everything I need to do. But it's also Survivor night (I'm just saying!), and the first poll always takes the longest to put together because it's completely from scratch.

If you still need a little help and encouragement - the Work Room is still open: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951867.html

Tomorrow is also the deadline to sign-up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/945807.html If you sign-up, and don't submit an entry for the week, that's OK. BUT you will be using one of the two "byes" that you have been given to start the game. There are some people who enjoy working without a net though!

So - other than post-election stuff - what news stories have you been following that other folks might have missed? Anything good/interesting happening out there?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Good morning. I'm tapping this out in my phone right now because I have the day off and I'm already "out and about". Happy Veterans Day to those of you in the US.

There's a poll that was posted last night. Someone please post a link to it in the comments. There are no veterans on it. So I guess it's "Happy Newbies Day" here at Idol!

Make sure to check it out, and show some love to your favorites in the form of comments and votes! (Autocorrect turned votes I go bites. Do not give the newbies "bites", unless requested)

Have a great Friday!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The final poll is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/941351.html and the question has been once again asked if there is a tie, will there be 2 winners?

No. There will be a tie-breaker.

Season 2 of LJ Idol's final actually went into a "tie-breaker of a tie-breaker"! (and was eventually decided by *1 vote*)

It might make for better drama *not* to tell you that. But I have already said it in a comment, so it's "out there" already, just everyone might not have seen it. :)

The more I see on social media about the Orlando shootings, the more I dislike people. Not a single person has shifted a single inch - in any direction - from where they were before this. If anything, they've just gotten deeper into their trenches for the moment - and the only thing they seem to see is what they were already looking at. :O

But then again, I'm also in my own "I don't like people" trench. But that's mostly just because of you guys! ;)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/938897.html is where the action is at.

But for those who missed it, there was a bit of action in yesterday's Green Room. Well, less action and more "action". (and not the kind Brock's Dad lamented either!)

I threw it out there "Are people really interested in a 10th anniversary celebration?" I got some comments in the GR itself and some via email.

But one of the themes that ended up coming up was very much the "Old School" vs "New School" ideas concerning Idol.

So I'm throwing it out there:

What are YOU getting out of LJ Idol?

Do you think there is a generational gap (be it actual age or time period involved) concerning how you see LJ Idol? (and should that play out ala Survivor: Gen X vs Millennials? :D)

Do the kids need to get off your lawn or do the old folks need to get out of the way? Or is there a happy medium where everyone can be happy? (Or, all equally miserable in a way that makes *me* happy - which is the most important thing!)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
"May. 31st, 2006 12:18 pm

Last night I figured out how to make LJ Idol work, and be something that would actually be INTERESTING and not just a completely "look at me! look at me" Gary pleading for attention and love fest.

I mean, this thing could actually *work*. (either that or fall completely on its face, which, might be funny too.*g*)"

That was 10 years ago. I had mentioned the name "LJ Idol" a couple days before, as part of "other things that I could do" once "LJ Fights" was over. (LJ Fights was where I took every member of my friends list, matched them up and played it out what would happen if they were engaged in a death match, until there was only one left standing!)

I wanted to do something that was more interactive, but I wasn't sure what... so I came up with a bunch of names for things and put up a poll. LJ Idol was one of those names, but I had no idea what that was.

It came to me in a dream.

Over the last 10 years, hopefully it's "worked" more than it has fallen on it's face! :)

Btw - your entries are due today: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/935840.html and no, you can't call in with the "Fell into a gorilla pit" excuse.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Good news! I will be spending my holiday registering new trademarks. I'm sure I can come up with some good names!  http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/12/22/460692655/government-cant-deny-trademarks-over-offensive-names-appeals-court-rules

More good news, the topic thread is still up and getting new entries for you to read: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/874412.html

The Work Room, as usual, has some interesting discussion going on:  http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/874592.html

But that's not why you are here in the Green Room. Sure, knowing what's going on is useful.

But you are here for the buffet!

The plates are to your left, the line forms to the right.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
We have tinsel to decorate the office at work.

Which means that everything is covered with the layer of sparkles that never seems to go away.  I recognize it as being from the same family of what occupies the back seat of the car from the last couple of years of having a bonus daughter. ;)

What is covering your life and space?

What have you read (so far) from the polls that you want everyone else to read as well? http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/872418.html and http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/872664.html

People have made a lot of assumptions on what will be happening over the next couple weeks as far as deadlines go... all I can say is "stay tuned!"  Will it mean there are a lot of bye-out eliminations?  There's only so much I can do about that!  I can make things easier for folks to stay in, but once they are out of byes, that motivation is all on them.  I *have* set up a situation though where folks can "gift bye" other contestants (giving up one of your own "free weeks" to save stop someone from byeing out - and where you can bring them into your team and pool your byes.  So we will see what happens with that!  The tools are there. How many will pick them up and use them?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Today is the deadline for the Topic 0 entries  http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/863082.html

So if you are goiing to submit something, you should do it soon!

The numbers are slowly climbing on the Sign-up Sheet: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/861191.html  but let's see what we can do over the next week to get over the top! OK? OK!!

How many more days is it until the Force Awakens?

Stop watching Jessica Jones for a moment to comment in the Green Room!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
We are still accepting sign-ups!  More than "accepting" really... actively recruiting would be a more accurate term!

Hopefully we will be filling up this weekend so we can actually get started moving next week.  So, if you would like that to happen, just be sure to get the word out!

I posted a list of "people who have completed all 3 steps" of the process yesterday: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/862341.html?thread=79612293#t79612293  If your name is not on there, that either means you need to send in your pay pal or your topics. Either way - get those in!

Teams aren't going to be due until just before the deadline of Week 1 - but I know there are new people since the last "Anyone looking for partners post here".  Actually, that would be ideal - bringing in folks that you might want to be on a team with! :D

Any big weekend plans?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
We are halfway through our first season of Idol Minor!

I hope everyone is having fun - and letting other people know about what's going on here. Sure, it's taking place in Idol proper. But that doesn't always mean folks are paying attention.

I think our young talent have a lot to be proud of with their creations and I'd love more people to see them!

Remember to vote for your favorites: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/856084.html

Entry count: 19,968. 32 entries to go until we hit 20,000! I'm not sure it will happen during Idol Minor, but it definitely will during the mini-season.

What did you do during your extended weekend?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
There is a poll up with all the new entries: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/854356.html

I was really impressed with the entries, and I hope everyone checking them out will be as well.

When I was typing Celena's for her (from her printed version) I told her "I'm going to type this exactly as you wrote it - including spacing and any spelling mistakes". She asked me why I would do that. It was what she wrote, as she wrote it. That's important.

Granted, she's 11. If she were younger, I would probably do a few edits. ;)

Also - that's just me! I have things going on in my head that other people don't.

It did get me curious though, where other people's heads are at with the editing. Obviously, this isn't like we're dealing with adults. Should I be "cleaning up" her work? (she certainly thinks I should be! :D) Should I not?

Where is that cut-off?

Heck, many "regular Idol" contestants have beta-readers who "clean up" their work! So is there really that big of a difference? Am I just being too difficult and need to relax a bit about it? ;)

I've had people ask me if these entries are "counting toward the Entries Written For Idol" total. Of course they are.

Current count: 19,958. 42 entries until we hit 20,000!! With enough Home Gaming over the next couple of weeks, we *could* hit it during Idol Minor!

[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The final poll is happening now: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/850328.html

There is an early lead. But this is Idol. Maybe it will expand. Maybe it will shift. Honestly, I have no idea. I just want to make sure that no one looks and thinks "Well, my vote doesn't matter!" Because it always does.

People have been asking what my plans are during the off-season. This of course implies that I *have* an off-season. :)

A good part of my time is probably going to be spent getting ready for the mini-season.

Well, that and finding a new job. A lot of the timing of the mini-season is going to revolve around what I find, when, and the details of that job. (when I need to be into work/when I get home) I'll want to stabilize as much as possible before adding an element as chaotic as Idol!

For the mini-season, keep in mind that I have a 2 for 1 thing on the Patreon page. :) You get an automatic spot in any mini-seasons that occur while you are a patron, plus an extra one for a friend. (as opposed to waiting for the sign up sheet and hoping to get there before I close it out)

I may take a week or two off though. But I doubt my brain will let me rest much longer than that!

What about YOU? What are your plans?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com

(wanders away and watches the 100 comments come in before continuing)

We also have some stuff happening here that I need to let you know about.

The deadline is TONIGHT: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/807797.html
So make sure to get your entries in!

There is a Work Room for your last minute panic attacks: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/808175.html

For those already finished, or those who are not (or no longer) contestants - there is the Home Game/Killing Floor - a place for entries *not* for the competition to be posted and constructive criticism given! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/808357.html

So, what ELSE is going on?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The next time someone tells you that something is impossible - remind them that Charles Manson is engaged.

If that can happen, there is hope for the rest of us to accomplish anything.

Either that, or it's proof that the world is beyond redemption and we are all doomed!

It's one of those.

While you are pondering which one, keep in mind that the DEADLINE to get your entries in is TONIGHT: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/805095.html

I repeat that - TONIGHT.

I repeat it because, judging from the last couple times I've said it, there will be someone who will post to this thread saying "When is the deadline?" or "I thought it was tomorrow"... ;)

It's Tonight.

If you have posted, excellent! If you haven't - http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/806189.html (there is also a Work Room to figure out any problems you having: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/805341.html)

If you want to Home Game it, or discuss the Home Game entries giving constructive criticism via the Killing Floor, there's a place to do that! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/805793.html

What are YOUR moments that either give you hope or convince you that we are doomed?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
My eye is feeling much better today, thanks for asking!

You know what would make it feel even better? If you are in the US, if you went out to vote today! (unless you've done early voting)

Sure, it's not as important as voting for your favorites in Idol, but it's still kind of important. So go out and do it!

If you *don't* live in the United States - don't worry, eventually you will! :)

The deadline was pushed back to next Monday. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/800348.html

and here is a Work Room to bounce ideas around: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/800648.html

There is also a very special Tribute to Luna Home Game happening that I very much hope you take the time to contribute to: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/801771.html (at very least go read them! If there is one thing that brings people together, it's wanting to kill me!)

I was thinking about this for the last couple of days - and what I want to do is having a Love Thread/Q&A thing for current Idol contestants. There's no guarantee that everyone will *want* to participate, but who knows... maybe they will.

I will post the name, and then you will respond *to that thread* with anything positive you want to say about them and/or questions that you have for them!

Heck, if it's YOU - tell people something that we might not already know about you!

I've divided them up, so it's 14 a day for the rest of the week! So start with these and there will be more tomorrow! :)
